Brownsea Island is a mixture of pinewood, heathland and salt-marsh, which makes it a haven for red squirrels and a rich variety of sea birds. In 1907 Baden-Powell held his first Scout camp on the island; today Brownsea still seems a world away from the bustle of nearby Poole.
