Southampton is not a city that's renowned for its architectural heritage. Successive waves of redevelopment by the city fathers during the twentieth century, as well as Hitler's high explosive approach to town planning, wrecked much of the visual appeal that this important south coast port used to possess. There are important survivals, of course, amid the character-free flats and retail 'destinations' - the Bargate and Tudor House are just two of the most impressive.
